100 years since the National Great Union, the Romanian Sports Institute organized the Romanian Sports Forum at the Palace of Parliament in Bucharest to discuss the role and place of Sport in Romania in the context of World Sport.

Sport in Romania is an important part of the country's culture and Romania has risen to prominence in a number of sporting areas in recent decades: besides football, at the Forum were mentioned other popular sports in Romania which include handball, volleyball, basketball, rugby union, tennis, and gymnastics. In fact, many Romanian athletes have achieved significant success and have won World and European medals in numerous sports during the years. Romania participated in the Olympic Games for the first time in 1900 and has taken part in 21 of the 28 summer games.
