Case Study: GER

In Germany all Olympic and recognised sports are under the umbrella of the German Olympic Sports Confederation. The future Olympics will hopefully have some new sports and disciplines coming from the ARISF IF community.

Dr Thomas Bach, IOC Member, DOSB President

Together We Are Stronger!

In 2006 the German Sports Confederation and the National Olympic Committee for Germany united to form the German Olympic Sports Confederation (DOSB). The purpose of this merger was to strengthen organised sport in Germany under one umbrella body and it has been a tremendous success.

This unification has streamlined the administration of sport in our country and enables us to take a holistic approach to supporting elite athletes and grassroots development across a wide range of sports.

As well as the sports that are currently within the programme of the Summer and Winter Olympic Games, we support 28 sports that are not currently on the Olympic Programme, including many of the sports governed by the IOC-recognised federations.

We have our own criteria for bringing sports into our family which are based on our very well organised club sport structure. In Germany we have over 27 million people registered with sports clubs so we say that a sport needs to have a certain number of people involved at club level across eight of our regional confederations to become a member.

If a sport satisfies these criteria, the national federation can begin to obtain access to funding for participation in international events and a range of other projects including social inclusion, school sport and exchange programmes.

As well as managing our nation’s participation in the Olympic Games, the DOSB has been able to centrally fund all of the athletes that will enter The World Games. For many of these athletes this event is the pinnacle of their career and we recognise the importance of this.

It is in the national interest to support a wide range of sports and we understand that all of our members make a valuable contribution to the welfare of the people of Germany and it has certainly strengthened the status of sport in the eyes of our Government.

To quote from our statutes: The importance of sport for the individual and society requires the unity of the German sports movement, both internally and externally.

Together we are stronger!
