Case Study: RSA
Embracing IOC Recognised Sports
The South African Sports Confederation and Olympic Committee (SASCOC) is the coordinating body for all high performance sport in South Africa.
Our main objective is to promote and develop high performance sport in South Africa and to act as the controlling body for the preparation and delivery of Team South Africa at all multi-sport international games including the Olympics, Paralympics, Commonwealth Games, The World Games and All Africa Games.
We recognise that every athlete that leaves our shores for a multi-sport event or a world championship is representing our richly diverse nation. Whether it is the Olympic Games or the Korfball World Championships, we believe we have a duty to work with the National Federations to support their efforts in preparing the elite athletes in their sport to be the best they can be.
This means that we don't restrict our support to the sports that are on the programme of the Summer and Winter Olympic Games.
Instead, we positively embrace the IOC-recognised sports and regularly provide support to athletes and teams from these sports.
The management of sport in South Africa was reorganised in 2005 and SASCOC was born out of this change. Here in our country, several of the IOC recognised sports are a lot more popular than many of the sports on the current programme of the Olympic Games so it is natural that we make decisions on funding and support based on a wide range of factors and not just whether or not a sport is in the programme of the Olympic Games.
The sporting landscape is always evolving and we believe it is important to take a broad and inclusive approach in everything we do.
